Carbon credits

Form Ghana naturally makes a contribution to climate change mitigation by reforestation of degraded land. This generates long-term carbon storage capacity, offering high quality carbon credits that provide significant co-benefits to local communities and to the area’s ecology. The first 4,500 VCS certified carbon credits from reforestation of degraded forest reserves in Ghana are now available.

Unique product: VCS verified carbon credits from FSC certified forest plantations
In January 2013, Form Ghana's reforestation activities have been independently validated under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) for reforestation of degraded forest reserves in Ghana. VCS is a renowned greenhouse gas accounting program used by projects around the world for verification and issuance of carbon credits on the voluntary carbon market. VCS_logo.gif
In 2010, Form Ghana Ltd. was the first West African company to obtain an FSC certificate and in 2013 it is the first company in the region with a verified forest carbon project. As a result, the company is able to provide a unique product for the voluntary carbon market: VCS verified carbon credits from FSC certified forest plantations.

Available credits
The first 4,500 VCS verified carbon credits (VCUs - Verified Carbon Units) from reforestation of degraded forest reserves in Ghana are now available. This number will increase to 40,000 VCUs in 2014 and up to 500,000 in 2018. The graph below shows the long term prognosis for emission reductions realised by Form Ghana.

Carbon storage, how does it work?

Growing forests absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. This is stored in tree stems, branches and roots and added to the soil through litter and decomposition. At Form Ghana CO₂is stored in various forest types: tree plantations with exotic as well as indigenous tree species and natural forest restoration in riparian buffer zones. Harvesting of tree plantations is followed with immediate replanting ensuring a positive net carbon storage over time. Because the company produces high quality timber for long-term applications (for example window frames or furniture), CO₂is stored long after harvesting.
